Michael is the first historical series novelist of our time to have used the English Civil Wars as his backdrop. His first novel featuring the inimitable Captain Stryker, Traitor's Blood, was published by John Murray in August 2010 and was an immediate success, leading to positive comparisons with Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe novels. The sequel, Devil's Charge, was published in August 2011 and has already proved a hit with critics and readers. The third book in the series, Hunter's Rage, was published in August 2012, followed by Assassin's Reign and the standalone ebooks Stryker and the Angels of Death and Highwayman Ironside in 2013. Book 5 in the series, Warlord's Gold, was published in hardcover in July 2014.
Michael's interest in British history is lifelong, and childhood holidays were spent visiting castles and battlefields. He became a Sharpe junkie at the age of 13, and his particular fascination with the Civil Wars was piqued partly by the fact that his hometown Petersfield is steeped in seventeenth century military history.
'Captain Stryker . . . is being pushed as "the Sharpe of the civil war", but Stryker is a character well able to attract readers on his own merits...Many of the most famous engagements of the civil war are still to come, and the enigmatic Stryker's involvement in them promises much entertainment' Sunday Times
